A biography of the early twentieth-century star who is often considered the best pitcher in the history of major league baseball
This book was a delight to read. Thomas is Walter Johnson's grandson, which turns out to help rather than hinder the final product. Thomas clearly admires his grandfather, but I wouldn't call his admiration "over-the-top." As I think most baseball fans would attest, his admiration is completely normal for any fan of the Big Train. The family relation also lends the book that indispensable quality of passion over the subject matter. Thomas clearly did his homework, and the Big Train is splendidly researched. The book never feels like a swamp of boring details; it always feels fresh, exciting, and interesting, as it undoubtedly was for Thomas as he discovered it all.One of the best features of the book is the inclusion of block quotations interspersed throughout. These quotations from people who lived around and witnessed Walter are fascinating. The fact that most people who saw him pitch couldn't believe their eyes made me wish I could have seen him perform. It would have been a sight to see.Lastly, the focus on Walter's character was excellent. Again, I didn't think this focus was over-the-top. Walter didn't appear to be made into a Saint but his character also seems to have been nearly above reproach. He was not perfect, but he was an example for kids who looked up to him. At the end of the day, that is the most important legacy a sports hero can leave behind.Highly recommended for anyone with even a slight interest in Walter Johnson and/or baseball in the early twentieth century.
